The analogy between fighting and A&S competitions in
this context does not work for me, because in a fight
you get lots of feedback. That new technique that you
have been practicing either works or doesn't and you
walk away knowng what you need to work on. Art is by
definition subjective, so getting objective opinions
on one's art work is something of an oxymoron. Does
your medieval thingee "beat up" the other medieval
thingee? No. Does an A&S judge look you directly in
the eyes before putting bruises on your ego? No. In a
lot of ways, the open interchange of energy in a fight
and the few words of encouragement, praise or
criticism exchanged before or after, can be a lot more
supportive of a new comer than an A&S judging sheet.
