Quite simple...
The ultimate check on the BoD is that if they torque someone off enough, they can resign their membership (or simply not renew when the time comes), and go off and form their own Society, with their own rules, their own Awards, their own system of checks and balances.
If their concerns are just, and their improvements to the system sufficient, they will attract others to their organization, and the BoD of SCA, Inc will find itself with fewer and fewer members, until ultimately it no longer exists.
The BoD legally owns the entirety of the SCA, Inc., and can deny membership for any reason it deems suitable. But they do not own the whole of Medieval Time Period Anachronistic recreation. The "Game" (or "Dream", as you prefer) isn't Patented, and couldn't be. Anyone can start a society at any time.
I, personally, know very little of the events that transpired around this. Nor do I have any desire to know. I do find it fascinating that a long and divisive argument on it is allowed to be ongoing, when threads that actually show promise of helping people are squashed with a "Take it offline, not everyone is interested" after 5 posts.
Just my thoughts, and my thoughts alone.
