[Archers] EQTA

I also applaud your efforts as well Sir Tnek! We are continuing discussions at the EM / DEM level with myself, DEM EQ, DEM Training, Mistress Lorelei and Sir Otto. I will post any outcome that might arise from our discussions. One of the biggest issues I am seeing is that there are a few EQ TA marshals that think they are fully warranted when they are not. We are working to correct this as well.

Huzzah Sir Tnek! I applaud your volunteering to assist with the
establishment of a set of rules for EQ TA. For me that is all I have ever
requested of the EQ community. Their archery requires different range
standards than “normal” TA. All I have ever asked for is a set of rules.
NOT being a horse person I disqualified myself from this task.

Again I applaud your volunteering for this task and seem the most likely
qualified candidate for the job. So let it begin and let’s firmly establish
safe EQ TA in Atlantia!

All,

I'm sorry I wasn't able to join in this discussion earlier, but my e-mail
has been down, and I just got it back again.

I have read this and the other EQ TA threads on this list since Janyn's post
on 9/20/15, and I want all to know that I have had significant recent
experience with EQ TA, and want to pass this information on to the TA
Marshallate, as well as others on the list. As many of you know, I have
been a senior TA Marshal and active archer for many years now; but what you
may not know is that I have more recently (in the last two years) become
active in equestrian as well. While I still consider myself to be a novice
rider, I have authorized at the "Lancer" level, and have participated in EQ
activities at about a dozen events or practices, including EQ TA at least 5
times. I also have a close relationship with the current DEMEQ, Lady
Alienor de Bathe, as she is my EQ mentor and primary horse provider (I don't
own a horse).

Obviously, I cannot speak to what others may have observed at events that I
did not attend, but I can tell you that in all of my experiences, I have
seen a strong effort by the EQ Marshallate to ensure safety during the EQ TA
activities, and that they have courteously sought out a TA marshal to work
with them on every occasion. In some cases, that TA marshal was myself,
while at others it was a local TA marshal for the event. I can also say
that I have not observed any dangerous acts on the EQ TA range, such as the
ones others on this list have indicated concern over. There may have been
some problems at a few events, or with some local EQ marshals, but I believe
that the senior EQ Marshallate is just as safety conscience as the TA
Marshallate, and fully on board with working with them to ensure that
safety.

I agree that we need to have a discussion on the rules for EQ TA, including
guidelines for marshalling requirements and, with Lord Janyn's & Lady
Alienor's approval, I am willing to work with both communities to ensure
that we have a set that will be agreeable to both.

I'm only now getting caught up on all of the TA and EQ email reading. As
Knights Marshal for Sacred Stone, I suggested (strongly) that our Equestrian
Marshals take the Target Archery marshals Class if they plan to do any horse
archery. That has been accomplished. Baroness Beatrice, our Baronial
Equestrian Marshal will also become an archery marshal. I happen to think
this is the best path.

There are other issues within the Equestrian community that they need to
work through, but they are just starting out like we were years ago, they'll
figure it all out eventually.

I think Lady Esa has hit on the correct answer here. I don’t know any in
the TA community that would NOT want EQTA as an activity. However, as Lady
Esa points out, many, if not most, of us TA marshals are not familiar with
the EQ requirements. I don’t mean just the EQTA I mean the EQ other stuff
they do and requirements for them to do “their thing” safely but those
aspects that would affect EQTA. To say this a bit more boldly, I think BOTH
communities would benefit from including EQTA in activities offered at
events, done in a safe manner.

Now that said, I am still in favor of some written rules and procedures for
doing EQTA safely. For example, I see their overshoot safety zones to be
considerably different than those for TA for several reasons. To help
clarify my thoughts here, I see videos of Kasai shooting from horseback
while his horse runs down a path. His first shot is forward, second to his
side and third to his rear. Very cool! But it does involve a safety zone
significantly different from that for TA. May I suggest that a person from
the TA community and a person from the EQ community work together to create
rules and procedures that can be submitted for review (a standard process we
went through when atlatl was introduced to Atlantia).

My two cents worth,

Christophe of Grey

Greetings Brothers and Sisters of the Bow,

What I have to add to the conversation may or may not be of value, but what
the heck...

As TA Range Marshal at Stierbach Baronial Birthday this past June we had
plans for mounted archery (the EQTA only got cut due to time constraints
when court was moved up significantly, not because of any safety issues or
other issues from EQ or TA). The way EQTA was incorporated was a joint
venture between myself the event EQ marshal who also happens to shoot
archery (although not a TA marshal).

Regarding the question of disagreement between the EQ marshal and the TA
marshal on the range.... The way her and I set out to run the range was to
set up my archery range with lanes for EQ. She advised on the lanes and
their EQ specific safety zones. I then backed that into my TA range and my
safety zones. Her and I discussed and agreed that she would be the EQ
marshal present and I would be the TA marshal present. Meaning, if I saw a
TA safety issue, I called it. Being ignorant of EQ regulations, she was
responsible for calling EQ issues or holds (clearly, anyone can call a hold,
but the buck stopped with her and I). We also agreed ahead of time that the
horses and riders being guests on the TA range meant that *my* say was final
on *my* range. I did not foresee any major issues, because her and I are
both safety conscious, and I am confident we would have erred on the side of
caution and backed each other up.

All of that said, I would like to see an add-on to the marshal classes for
both TA and EQ that bring in the other discipline to get a safety 101 on
each other's art for just such events so that I would have been informed and
knowledgeable about the calls she would be making regarding the horses and
vice versa. I do not feel I need to get a warrant in EQ to assist with
EQTA, BUT taking the safety class would sure be helpful.

Maybe taking the safety class and passing the test but not doing three
events is a happy-medium for cross-discipline safety training?

Lady Esa inghean Donnchaidh
Chancellor of the Exchequer of the fair Canton of Abhainn Iarthair
