I approve of using the 122cm targets. In the two Stierbach events that had
atlatl: Defending the Gate and Stierbach Baronial Birthday, we used both
hay bales for an atlatl battle and the larger target for a range
practice/unofficial royal round. The distances for the practice hay bales
were at 20, 30, and 40 yds. The target was set up at 20 yds at Baronial
Birthday and at DtG, the line moved from the 20, 30, or 40 yd line
depending on who was playing. Although the target takes 9 hay bales to set
up, we could use the archery butts and the use of foam backing would make
this set up even quicker and easier.
As for the timed rounds, it is possible to safely get 6 darts off in 30
seconds. I have tested this along with another at House Woflhau practice. We
were both at the atlatl battles at Pennsic this year. She was the one who
had the black and gray fletched darts at the 2nd battle and I had the dark
red and dark green fletched darts.
House Wolfhau has a group that have been playing with Atlatl for about a
year at the house gathering/practice and people are able to get a non zero
score from the 20 yd line after a few practices and a little instruction.
Even at the Atlatl battles this year at Pennsic, after a quick demo and a
few practice throws, complete novices were able to get a distance of 20
yds. Using the 122 cm target will also encourage people to try this new
game and as skill and increases to where we have people at the grand bowmen
level with the atlatl we can move to the 60 cm target to increase
difficulty. Thanks
