[Archers] FW: [Marshalls] [Branchseneschals] Fighter Practice Waivers

Good evening everyone. I wanted to pass along some words about one of the recent “topics of discussion” from Unevent. I have heard in a few places now that Target Archery and or Thrown Weapons now require waivers. I also heard this at Unevent. According to our Kingdom Seneschal, we DO NOT require waivers to be used. The exception is as it always has been for minors or non members. The real discussion was if it was an “official” event or not. More guidance will be coming from Corpora about social media and the use of it to advertise practices and events. So unless I am told otherwise by the Earl Marshal, I am inclined to follow direction by the Kingdom Seneschal. So that means we continue business as usual like we have been in the past.

In Service,

Janyn Fletcher

That is actually a very simple answer - Society/Corporate does not require them for those functions. So just the fighters. Encourage SCA membership!! Saves them $5 a event.. :)

Rozsa,

I have an additional clarification request, please. From the interpretations that I have been

hearing, these 'additional' activities that are requiring waivers are only the marshal ones.

Why do we not (or do we) need to have waivers at announced activities that are non-marshal,

for example brewing, glass blowing, etc... or basically any all A&S types, where people

participate hands on? ( I specifically chose a few where things could get dangerous, but

don't want to discount the the less 'dangerous' ones like weaving, dancing, etc...)

Just to make sure it is clear... this covers ALL activities that require a marshal...meaning Armored, Rapier, Archery, Thrown Weapons, & Equestrian, correct?

(I know the answer but I want to make sure it is specific, because I know that questions will be asked.)

Good evening!

Since I have received so many questions today I wanted to try to provide a little more clarification. The definition of a Society event actually changed back in 2009 and is described in Corpora (which I will post at the end of this email). Right before I stepped up as Kingdom Seneschal the Society Seneschal published to the Kingdom Seneschals a nearly complete new draft of the Society Seneschal Handbook which will be bringing into more focus how the SCA now defines what a Society Event is and should be published within the next few months. The official and unofficial verbiage went away with the change in Corpora and we now have what Atlantia has always termed as an event now being a Kingdom Calendar event and the things that we in Atlantia have termed as unofficial events/functions/activities becoming locally advertised events. With this in mind when I asked for a definition of when we needed to sign fighter practice waivers and when we did not I got the if it looks like a duck scenario. Sooo that lands us where we are now.

I am going to define the duck as anything with the Branch name in the title this does not include personal blogs, personal Facebook pages, etc. Just the (and I am picking on my home group here) Sacred Stone Facebook page or the Sacred Stone e-list. That is obviously where Sacred Stone has chosen to relay information regarding Sacred Stone it looks like a duck.

I absolutely understand there is no way to control every possible reference to a practice (party, gathering, etc.) on an SCA egroup, social media, or meeting. All that would have to be done is if during a meeting someone mentions a fighter practice the Seneschal or Marshall simply asks if this is an SCA fighter practice if the answer is no, ask them to refrain from giving further details until after the SCA meeting officially closes (and dont publish the practice in the minutes). When the meeting is closed, then talk about all the non-SCA functions you want. Same basic scenario on the e-list or social media page the Seneschal or Marshall asks if it is an SCA function if not please provide the information off-list/off the branch social media page, etc.

Remember only non-members participating in the actual martial activity have to sign a waiver.

The questions that were put to me regarding court business, etc., that is clarified in Corpora only at events published in the Kingdom Calendar (corporate publication) that is not changing. Additionally garb is still not required at meetings, and informal classes, etc.

I hope this clarifies things a bit more. If I have missed anything, please ask.

II. EVENTS

A. Society Events Defined

The term Society event refers to tournaments, feasts, and other activities whereby participants can display

the results of their researches into the culture and technology of the period in an environment which evokes

the atmosphere of the pre-17th century European Middle Ages and Renaissance. It also refers to educational

activities involving either one-time classes or ongoing Society university organizations, and meetings where

participants share skills or discuss the business of the group. All Society events must be sponsored by

branches of the Society, registered with the Seneschal of the sponsoring branch, publicized at least to the

members of that branch, and conducted according to Society rules.

B. Requirements for Participants at Society events

Anyone may attend Society events provided he or she wears an attempt at pre-17th century clothing,

conforms to the provisions in Corpora, and complies with any other requirements (such as site fees or

waivers) which may be imposed. At business meetings and informal classes, the requirement to wear pre-17th

century dress may be waived. All participants are expected to behave as ladies or gentlemen.

C. Business Requiring Prior Announcement

Formal actions and announcements with long-term impact on the Society may occur only at Society events

for which a full announcement including date, time, and place has been published in advance in the

appropriate corporate publication. These actions include Crown and Coronet Tournaments, Coronations and

Investitures, appointment of officers, presentation of awards and titles, proclamation of law, and the

establishment or advancement of branches. However, deputy officers and officers below principality level

need not be appointed at published events.

Good Morning!

As put out at the Seneschal meeting at Unevent the definition of 'events' in the SCA has changed and we no longer had 'official' and 'unofficial' events. We have Kingdom Calendar events and locally advertised events. The definition of 'event' has also broadened and now includes traditional events, demos, A&S gatherings, fighter practices, etc.

This has impacted waivers.

Until Society changes policies again... :) If any fighter practice is advertised in any Branch meeting, newsletter, egroup, facebook page, or any other media in which the Branch's name is in the title of the media (i.e. Atlantia's Facebook page) - marshalls and waivers are required at the fighter practice.

Now, if your branch has a regularly scheduled Tues night fighter practice, I have approval from Society that you can do one roster waiver for the month. You do not have to do a separate waiver for every Tuesday night practice.

Additionally ONLY the non-member individuals physically participating in the fighter practice are required to sign the waivers. Blue card carrying members and non-fighters do not sign the waiver. If every fighter is a member - then no waiver is needed.

Please encourage your fighters to become members and marshalls. The more we have of each - the less paper we all have to track and the easier it will be to have practices.

(Waivers get mailed to me until I get a new Waiver Deputy. As it is an Officer of State position I have to follow Kingdom Law in staffing it, however, I have had interest already shown in the position so I am very hopeful that by the end of January we will have an official Waiver Deputy again.)

If you have any questions, please ask!
