Posted on Behalf of Duchess Kalisa Aleksandrovna:

Greetings unto the populace of fair Atlantia from Duchess Kalisa
Aleksandrovna, Co-Head Retainer to Their Highnesses, Michael and Seonaid.

I come to you today to bring news of an exciting new initiative that will
be offered to the populace. As you may know, I currently hold the positions
of both Kingdom Chatelain and Co-Head Retainer for Their Highnesses,
Michael and Seonaid. Their Highnesses and I are all aware of the true value
and importance of newer members, and we wanted to do something to
specifically focus and encourage their participation. We recognize that
newcomers are essential to the future of our Society. So we have decided to
join forces, if you will, and combine the efforts of the Office of the
Chatelain with the role of retaining. We are calling this initiative the
“Newcomer Reignbow Initiative.”

Imagine what it would have been like if you had been able to spend a few
hours at one of your first events with the sitting Princess or Queen,
seeing the day through Her eyes. We now hope to make that possible. We hope
to encourage newer members to sign up to retain for Her Highness at events.
They will be paired up with another individual, who has experience with
retaining in addition to having knowledge about the SCA in general. During
the assigned shift, the primary duty will be to retain for Her Highness and
ensure that Her Highness is tended to and has all that She needs. But
during retaining shifts there is often much waiting and sitting, and it is
during this time that it may be a wonderful opportunity for a new member to
ask questions about the SCA and the activities that are happening all
around them at the event.

What is required in order to retain, you ask? We do not require prior
experience, for that is what this initiative is all about. You need only to
have the ability to be mobile and get around, to carry a drinking vessel or
a basket, and to have an overall friendly and helpful demeanor.

Now here is the really great part. This initiative is not only for newer
members. Perhaps you have heard the phrase, “Everyone is a Chatelain.” With
this new initiative we hope to bring that vision one step closer to
reality. For this program to work, we need experienced members to volunteer
to assist as well, meaning, we need you to sign up for retainer shifts. For
it is the more experienced members who will be able to share their
knowledge, insights, and stories with the newer members. The more
experienced members that we have sign up, the more newer members can
participate in what we hope will be a wonderful and memorable experience.

Please help us to spread word so that the “Newcomer Reignbow Initiative”
can be a success for newcomers and experienced members alike. Pennsic seems
like the perfect opportunity to jump start this program. If you wish to
participate in this initiative, please contact me at scakalisa at yahoo.com. I
look forward to meeting and working with all of you.

In Service to the Dream,

Duchess Kalisa
