To Ponte Alto fighters and friends:

Please cross-post this to Stierbach and any other lists you know of. This challenge should be a lot of fun for everyone-let's get out there and have someone from the barony win!

Subject: [grandarmy] 60 Fights in 60 Days--Are You Up to the Challenge?

Please cross-post to whatever Atlantian lists you can think of.

Fighters of Atlantia,

It is time to scale the rust off your helms and scrape the mold from those leather vambraces!

Since time out of mind, it has been the custom of the warlord of House Blackspear to encourage winter training by challenging its members to complete 60 fights in 60 days. This year we wish to spread the wealth by opening the challenge to all of Atlantia's fighting community, heavy and rapier alike.

How does it work?

--The challenge begins on January 16 and runs through March 17.

--Keep a record of all your fights during that time span. A "fight" is a single set of sparring. That can mean a fight to a single quick kill in a bear pit, or it could be a 20-minute training session. You may record one fight per opponent per day. Example: I attend the Storvik fighter practice and fight Lord Shoprat twice, Count Vladimir once, and Baron Sean three times. My record for the day would list three fights: Shoprat, Vlad, and Sean. I attend the Lochmere practice the next day and fight Vlad twice, Sean twice and Giacomo once. My record for that second day would be three fights.

--Also record if the opponent is a member of the Order of the Chivalry or is a Provost (or other kingdom's rapier equivalent).

--At the end of the 60-day period, e-mail your list of fights to Joselin d'outremer at joselindoutremer<at>gmail.com. Please provide: your list of opponents and the days on which you fought them, the total number of fights, and the total number of fights against knights and/or provosts. The lists of fights are due to Jos no later than 11:59 p.m. on March 26.

There will be prizes. These will not be great or grand prizes, for the true prize in a contest such as this is in what you gain inside. Nonetheless, each fighter who submits Jos a documented list of 60 fights in 60 days by the March 26 deadline will receive a special token of some sort. The fighter who completes the greatest number of fights will receive something much spiffier, possibly a scroll of achievement. The fighter who has the greatest number of fights against chivalry and provosts also will receive something nice.

Frequently asked questions:

--Do fights at tournaments or other official events count?

Yes

--Does killing someone in single combat in melee count.

No. Melee kills of any sort do not count.

--Can I count a fight if I only know the person's livery, but not her name?

No.

(Part of the point of this is to learn people's names. If you fight someone in a tourney bearpit and don't ask or don't remember the name, you don't get to record the fight.)

--I just fought a provost on a heavy list. Does that count for my total of fights against knights and provosts?

No.

(Unless that provost is also a knight. To receive the provost/knight extra credit, the person must be fighting in their primary discipline.)

--We don't have many people at our local practice, so how can I achieve this challenge? That's not fair!

(shrug) Another point of this exercise is to encourage travel and interbaronial attendance at fighter practices and events.

I'm sure there are other questions. Feel free to e-mail me with them at joselindoutremer<at>gmail.com. As with everything we do in the SCA, when in doubt, honor should be your guide. Err on the side on integrity and making the challenge more difficult for yourself. The work is its own reward.

Your servant,

Joselin d'outremer

Warlord of House Blackspear
