SPANISH SIDESWORD: PACHECO and the VULGAR FENCERS
3 hour class

This class will be an examination of don Luis
Pacheco de Narváez's counters to vulgar (or
common) fencing described by Pacheco in his text
The New Science. The student will be introduced
to the basics of Spanish swordplay including the
Three Universal Methods of Defense, footwork, and
the Spanish notation for movement and swordplay.
Following the introduction, participants will
have the opportunity to attempt each vulgar
technique and will then apply a Spanish counter
as described in the text. During the final phase
of the class, a vulgar technique will be
demonstrated and the class will work together to
predict the counters Pacheco describes in the
text using the principles of Spanish defense.

FUNDAMENTAL FOOTWORK for FIGHTING
1 hour: Class size restricted

No matter what field you fight on or what forms
you use on that field, footwork is fundamental!
We'll draw from a variety of sources to explore
ways of moving the feet (and the body) for heavy
rapier, cut & thrust, and armored combat. We'll
work towards building a lexicon for footwork and
look at ways to construct your own movement drills.

Required Gear: comfortable clothing allowing
freedom of movement (smooth-soled footwear is
very helpful) Optional Gear: full armored or
unarmored combat gear, water, notebook & pen

SPADA LONGA: INTRODUCTION to ITALIAN LONGSWORD
2 hours: Class size restricted

The longsword is the centerpiece of Fiore's art,
and his manuscripts detail its use in both
unarmored and armored situations. This class will
be a very brief overview of some of the basic principles of this art.

Required Gear: full armored or unarmored combat gear for active participation
Optional Gear: water, notebook & pen, chair

MOVEMENT and BODY MECHANICS in the FLOWER of BATTLE
(2 hours): Class size restricted

Whether or not you have any experience in SCA
combat, other martial arts, or dance, this class
will help you explore some of the basic concepts
of movement in Fiore?s system. Movement, balance,
body mechanics, time, distance are among the
concepts covered. This class will also include an
introduction to safely falling and rolling.

Class size is best limited to 10 people
participating, but more are welcome to come and
watch. The class will involve some falling, rolling, and throwing.

Required Gear: comfortable clothing allowing
freedom of movement (smooth-soled footwear is very helpful)
Optional Gear: water, notebook & pen

TEMPO ACCORDING to FABRIS
1 hour class

Tempo is one of the fundamental concepts
necessary for a mastery of the art of combat, yet
few seem to understand and use it well. We will
discuss the concept of Tempo as explained by
Salvator Fabris (with a smattering of Capo Ferro,
Giganti, and others thrown in). We will practice
a set of drills and explore tactical situations
that should help students come to a better
understanding of this vital skill. Class will be
fairly rigorous with repeated drills. Basic SCA
rapier equipment is required including sword,
mask, jacket, etc. Writing materials. Familiarity
with the works of an Italian master such as
Fabris, Capo Ferro, or Giganti is helpful but not required.

BUILDING a DRILL SET
1 hour class

Many who fence in the SCA do not use drills as a
normal routine in their practice, party because
they are unsure of particular drills or how to
apply drills. This will try to give students a
basic set of drills that they can use no matter
what system of combat they study, although the
emphasis will be on late Italian rapier
techniques. We will start with solo drill and
continue with paired cooperative drills. Finally,
we will try some paired antagonistic drills that
should not only hone techniques but also explore
tactical situations. Class will be fairly
rigorous. Basic SCA rapier equipment is required
including sword, mask, jacket, etc. Writing
materials. Familiarity with Italian rapier
techniques as advocated by an Italian master such
as Fabris, Capo Ferro, or Giganti is helpful.

Sir Logos von Schnecke, KSCA, OP (Timothy Lyon)

18, and served as Earl Marshal of the Middle
Kingdom for three years. He has taken advantage
of the growing interest in the Western Martial
Arts to pursue historical studies. He has
studied with some of the best scholars in the
movement including Wilson, Chelak, Charon, Hayes,
and Leoni. He has experimented with many styles,
but for several years has focused on the works of
Salvator Fabris and George Silver.
