Two things I thought people might be interested in knowing about:

June 23, Day trip (Saturday)
Fairfax County Parks and Rec is sponsoring a day trip to Philadelphia to the King Tut exhibit. $95 includes admission ticket & bus (no meals). Includes motorcoach and admission. "The Franklin Institute will display close to 130 Egyptian antiquities in this limited time exhibit. The 18th Dynasty produced some of the most exquisite pieces of art from some of Egypt's most famous rulers. Meals, IMAX and Planetarium on your own."
If interested, here's the website, registration begins tomorrow: http://s51b209.co.fairfax.va.us/tnt_quickresult.asp?category2=TRIP++&subject=&facility2=9999&day=9999&Submit2=Search&offset=6

July 24, 6:45 to 9 pm
The Smithsonian Resident Associates Program is sponsoring a lecture:

"CASTLES AND CRUSADERS: In the Middle East, castles built by the Crusaders are an evident expression of cultural dialogue between East and West. Architectural historian Douglas Lewis explores this mutual influence of architecture and culture among Europeans, local Christians, Muslims, and Turks. He defines the great 12th century of castle-building in the Levant by traveling to massive European-built castles, including Monreal, Sahyun, and the splendid Krak des Chevaliers. He then demonstrates how these were answered by powerful Islamic fortresses such as Aleppo and Shaizar.

Strategic innovations by the three orders of monastic warriors—the Knights Hospitallers, Templars, and Teutonic Knights— are studied through the imposing remains of their 12th- and 13th-century castles in the Holy Land, on Rhodes, and in Greece. He then shows an Islamic response with a visit to the stunningly situated castle at the oasis of Tadmor. "

It requires pre-registration and there is a fee. For more info, the website is here: http://residentassociates.org/ticketing/tickets/reserve.aspx?performanceNumber=83588

The Smithsonian RA are also have lectures on Kyoto, Venice and other things, both SCA-relevant and not, so check out that site periodically.
