    Well, there are a couple different fields to play on within the society.
Depending on what you do, there are different folks you can get involved
with. I started out in the kingdom of atlantia, playing with Roxybury Mill &
Storvik folks. In my first 6 months, I ended up moving to the Kingdom of the
West (my first authorization as a fighter was in the west). When I was out
in the Kingdom of the West, I practiced with my Barony. My Barony in the
west didn't usually go to wars, so I latched onto the Prince of the Mists'
lance or the Western Spartans or some other respectable kingdom warband. I
could never fight against my kingdom or throne while I was a Westerner, even
if I was camping with folks from Caid.

    I take great pride in being an Atlantian warrior. At any major war, I'm
an Atlantian. I take the war field because I love the joy of killing in
battle. There is just something to be said about dropping four shieldmen in
under ten seconds, or crippling an enemy unit by slaying their spearmen
across a barrier. For me, that joy translates best into the offensive game
of a spear. I actually prefer battles to tourney fighting, but I'm
ambivalent about smaller skirmishes (under 20 people).

    When I go to a war, I love fighting beside people I practice with. There
is just something good about really knowing the people you fight beside.
Most of the fighting I do, however, is sword and shield tourney practice
against people at the Thursday night practice.

    Having been to a fair number of wars, I think the biggest thing we need
is simply to fight as a warband more frequently. I've had the opportunity to
fight along side excellent warfighters. IMHO, the Ponte Alto Warband as it
stands is still a fairly green unit. In the field battles at pennsic last
year, we did a great job of just crushing the units in front of us. In
resurrection and woods battles,  we had a much harder time maintaining
cohesion.

    Ponte Alto is a pretty big and diverse barony. It's hard for the
fighters of Ponte Alto to have some of the close social connections I've
seen in other warbands. When the warband does form up, there are always
folks I'm unfamiliar with. Ponte Alto just has so many different households
and social circles, that it's very hard to really know everyone. Also, the
east coast has Markland, Dagohir, Tuchux, and other non-kingdom groups you
could go fight with. My game is the SCA, while I'm curious about many of
those folks, I'm not switching over just because of curiosity, nor would I
go stand beside them in a battle, when I have Ponte Alto friends.

    Back a couple of years ago, Duke Uther (of the west kingdom) won the An
Tir crown. Uther and Jade lead up the Western Spartans. Come West vs. An Tir
war, the spartans (who are a critical element of the west kingom army),
chose to fight for An Tir. Jade, who was at the time Crown Prince of the
West, could not fight for An Tir, but could not in his heart field against
his own cohort. Since it was an inter-kingdom war, the number shift really
turned the war into a battle that favors west kingdom's taste... A target
rich environment ;)
