Nick,

An A&S entry at an event is the showing of a piece of
period art in any form, made by you. (Or performed by
you in case it is a performance of any kind.)

Some of the elements for judging an entry are
craftsmanship, documentation (very important),
originality, and autenthicity.

In your case, you are telling us that you have been
researching "traditional" methods of tattoing. You
may want to clarify in your documentation what
"traditional" means. Is it traditional from 18th
Century Polynesia? Native American 17th C? If that
is the case, it would be out of period and you may
want to reconsider your entry for this particular
competition.

However, if you found something that was done in
period, and describe how exactly it was done in
period, and how your work compares in materials and
technique to those done in period, that would make an
interesting entry.

I don't know if this is a tattoo that you have already
made on yourself or if it is something that you are
attempting to do at the site. If something that you
have already done, take also pictures to include in
your documentation, both of the period design and your
own. If you are trying to do it on yourself, talk to
the autocrat first as there may be rules and
regulations and it may not be appropriate (or
hygienic, or tasteful) to do it onsite.

Another option is temporary tattoos. Henna tattoos
lend themselves very nicely to this, but I don't know
if this is the kind of tattooing that you are
researching.

I hope that this helps, and can't wait to see your
documentation. It sounds like an interesting and
challenging project.

Regards,

Belphoebe
