Center for Renaissance and Baroque Studies:
The Impact of Islamic Culture on the Arts of the Renaissance

The Center for Renaissance & Baroque Studies at the University of Maryland
is delighted to announce that it has received funding from the Maryland
Humanities Council to host a day-long workshop for teachers entitled The
Impact of Islamic Culture on the Arts of the Renaissance. The event, which
will be held on Friday, February 4, 2005, will be a reprise of last summer's
Fine Arts Institute and will focus on the artistic exchange between Arab
culture and the arts in countries of the western Mediterranean as Europe
moved from the late medieval period to the Renaissance. Scholars from around
the country will offer lectures and workshops on topics that range from
patterns to architecture to developing lesson plans on Islamic art and
culture.

The World History Core Learning goals for high schools in the State of
Maryland now place increased emphasis on students' understanding of the
history, diversity, and the commonality of people of the nation and world,
and this event is a fantastic opportunity for teachers to better prepare
themselves to meet this standard.

For a registration form and more information, please visit the Center's
website at www.crbs.umd.edu/programs/islam.
