THE TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON
by John Patrick
September 6 - 27, 2003
Directed by Roland Branford Gomez
Produced by Jay Cohen & Russell Wyland
They won at Midway; they conquered at Guadalcanal; now the military must win
the hearts and minds of the people of Tobiki? A classic American comedy set
in post-World War II Okinawa where the United States military teaches
democratic institutions to the islanders. Not wanting to offend his hosts,
the young officer-in-charge struggles with how local customs fit with
democracy. What is the role of Lotus Blossom, the local geisha girl? What
democratic function does a teahouse serve? This hilarious struggle between
the militarys effort to institute reform and the villager who always
out-maneuver the Captain, celebrates a wise and witty clash of cultures.
