Noble Friends,
On this date in 1066, Harold Godwinson, the last Saxon king of England,
died at the Battle of Hastings. This battle began the Norman conquest of
England, which took several years to complete. O.K., you all knew that, but
it is such a significant event that it bears remembering here. You can read
more about the battle at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Hastings .
One reason we know so much about the battle is that it was commemorated by
the Bayeux Tapestry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayeux_Tapestry . The
tapestry as a historic commentary raises many questions (like what was on
the alleged missing piece at the end, possibly showing William the
Conqueror being crowned). It really is a piece of medieval propaganda.
Well, the victors almost always get to write history, and the tapestry is a
pretty good case in point.
Finally, this is a good time to again remind you about the Bayeux Historic
Tale Construction Kit, a web site that allows you to make your own online
tapestry: http://htck.github.io/bayeux/#!/ . It is a fun toy to play with,
and does have other applications such as award scrolls. Bookmark this one
friends, or better yet, download the whole application.
