Noble Friends,

All three panels of a 16 century Dutch triptych will soon be reunited at a
US gallery.

The Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts has acquired the central panel
known as *The Entombment* for its permanent collection. The panel shows
Jesus being placed in a sarcophagus by various important biblical figures.
This summer the painting will join the two privately-owned side panels
showing the work's original benefactors. The side panels were already on
permanent loan to the museum.

The work is by Dutch master Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574). He studied
in Italy, and brought the Italianate Renaissance style to the Netherlands.
Apparently the artist painted the central panel first, and offered it for
sale in his studio. The side panels show members of the original purchasing
family (sadly, not identified in the story, nor is the church where the
triptych would have been installed).

The story is at https://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/73078 .

More on van Heemskerck is found at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maarten_van_Heemskerck .
