Noble Friends, Especially Fellow Scots,
On this date in 1314, the English Knight Henry de Bohun was killed in
single combat by King Robert the Bruce in the opening moves of the Battle
of Bannockburn.
King Robert was upon a small palfrey inspecting the field in front of the
Scottish battle lines. He was lightly armored, and had only a battle axe
for a weapon.
Henry de Bohun, mounted on a war horse with a lance, saw the King as an
easy target. Hoping for personal glory the knight spurred his horse into a
full charge.
King Robert did not flinch, but turned his horse and sped forward. At the
last second he swerved away from de Bohun's lance, stood up in the stirrups
and clove the Knight's skull right through his helm.
The King's commanders berated him for taking such a risk. His retort was to
lament that de Bohun had broken his second best axe.
The death of de Bohun roused the Scots, but cast a pall throughout the
English host. It was just a small taste of what was to fall upon the
English the next day when they were routed from the battlefield.
