Noble Friends,
Today the History Blog features a story on the rediscovery and
documentation of a set of 13th century murals long hidden in Angers
Cathedral.
The panels are a visual *vita* covering the life and miracles of St.
Maurille, a 5th century Bishop of Angers. The magnificent paintings were
covered in whitewash after a fire in 1451. In the 18th century tall wooden
choir stalls were installed in front of them.
The murals were rediscovered in 1980 during renovations to the church. Now
they have been carefully documented by researchers from Cambridge
University's Hamilton Kerr Institute. They worked in an incredibly tight
space behind the choir stalls to photograph the murals in 8,000 images
which were stitched back together using Adobe Photoshop.
