On this date in 1580 Francis Drake completed a voyage around the world when
he landed at Plymouth. His remaining ship the *Golden Hind* (formerly the
*Pelican*) was the last of five that originally sailed from Plymouth on 13
December 1577.

During his epic voyage around the tip of South American and into the
Pacific Ocean, Drake captured 13 ships, relieving them of a tremendous
amount of treasure, raided six Spanish colonial towns, and laid claim to
part of what is now California. His raid into the Pacific shocked the
Spanish, and was a *cause belli* that eventually led to war with Spain, the
Armada, and all that stuff. It also got Drake a knighthood from the
grateful, and now much richer, Queen Elizabeth who had financed the venture.
