Noble Friends,

Today both the History Blog and the BBC report on the discovery of a rare
ogham stone in Coventry, England.

The 4-inch sandstone rock was found by a man working in his garden in 2020.
The stone is marked with a system of writing used in the "dark ages" to
write in the Irish language. Such writing was sometimes carved into early
Christian monuments such as standing crosses, but also had other uses.
Ogham stones have been found in Ireland (naturally), but have also been
found in Wales and western England. No other example has been found as far
east as Coventry.

Only part of the writing has so far been deciphered, the name Mael Dumcail.
This style of ogham dates the stone to the 4th or 5th century CE.

The discoverer, a geography teacher named Graham Senior, has donated the
stone to a museum in Coventry.
