Noble Friends,

Today the BBC is offering a story on what is believed to be the oldest
medieval shipwreck in British waters. A large number of stone mortars in
its cargo have given the ship its name, "The Mortar Wreck".

The clinker-built cargo ship dated from the mid-13th century. It is thought
to have loaded cargo at Poole, then sank in the harbor shortly after
getting underway. Besides the stone mortars, its cargo included cups,
pottery and several carved grave slabs. Much of the cargo has been raised
and preserved since the wreck's 2020 discovery. Now the grave slabs have
been raised as well.

You can see the remarkably well preserved slabs at

An earlier BBC story shows some of the other artefacts, as well as a video
showing part of the clinker hull:

According to stories, plans are underway to salvage the what remains of the
ship itself for study and preservation.

Yours Aye,
