Noble Friends,

Ah, a trip to the archives! Gaddgedlar was a small, but excellent, Scottish
living history club that sadly folded around 2010. I located their web
site through the Wayback machine, and bookmarked it for their outstanding
garb photos and costuming advice. The photo of the crossbowman in the
gallery section of their 15th century page was the inspiration for my early
gambezon-and-sallet garb. Even if you don't portray a Scot, their site is
worth exploring.

Gaddgedlar's site can still be viewed at
https://web.archive.org/web/20070105112339/http://www.gaddgedlar.com/ .

One of their best features was a garb and kit guide for participants in a
Bannockburn reenactment. The internal link is at the very bottom of their
Bannockburn 2003 page. Take note of their warning: "Under no circumstances
will participants be admitted on the field wearing tartan, kilts, plaids or
having their face (or any other part of their anatomy) painted blue! Scots
soldiers were dressed identically to their European counterparts." Take
that, Mel Gibson!

Yours Aye,
