Noble Friends,

Today the History Blog reports on the discovery of a weapons chest on the
wreckage of the Royal Danish warship *Gribshunden*. The ship sank after a
fire and explosion off the coast of Sweden during a 1495 diplomatic mission.

The remains of the chest, called a *zeuglade*, and its contents were first
noted in 2019 during other work on the wreck, but were not fully documented
until 2023. Analysis has now identified remnants of canister shot, possible
powder charges, and molds for making lead balls for arquebuses.

Photos of the artefacts and contemporary illustrations of z*eugladen* in
use are found with the rest of the story at
https://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/70030 .

More about the *Gribshunden* is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gribshunden
 .

And arquebuses? Try https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arquebus .

Yours Aye,
