Noble Friends,

Today's History Blog discusses restoration of the 15th century Cross of the
Pelican, a piece of religious art severely damaged during an earthquake in
2016.

The piece in question is a tempra-on-wood depiction of Christ on the cross,
topped by a pelican in her piety. The piece was painted about 1472 by
Nicola di Ulisse di Siena. It was displayed in the Abbey Church of St.
Eutizio near Perugia, Italy.

The cross was broken into some 30 pieces when it was smashed during the
earthquake. Experts from the Vatican Museum's Restoration Laboratory
reassembled the fragments, filled in missing parts, and restored the paint.
The result is a truly magnificent piece of artwork. The cross is expected
to return to its place above St. Eutizio's altar this fall.

The story, with a video clip (no narration), is at
