Noble Friends, especially Vikings,

Today the History Blog reports on another Viking find, this time a bronze
die, possibly for making decorative work for a helmet.

The die is a positive, showing entwined vegetation and animals. A piece of
soft metal would have been placed over the die, followed by a protective
piece such as leather. Then the whole shmegegge would have been beaten with
a hammer to transfer the die's image onto the metal. Then the embossed
metal would be pinned or soldered to whatever item was being decorated. Way
cool.

The die will soon be sold at auction, thus the gentle pun in the History
Blog entry's title, "Viking Bronze Die Goes Under the Hammer".

Yours Aye,
