Noble Friends,

On this day in 1536, Henry VIII was seriously injured while jousting at
Greenwich Palace. He was knocked from his armored horse, which then fell
upon him. The King was unable to speak, and possibly unconscious, for two
hours.

Although this proved to be the end for Henry's jousting, it wasn't the only
tumble he had taken. He had another serious injury while jousting in 1524,
and many other falls. Some historical researchers, including Dr. Lucy
Worsley, point to possible traumatic brain injuries caused by concussions
that are now known to affect modern athletes. These cumulative injuries
could have contributed to the vindictive and paranoid character Henry
displayed in later life.
