Noble Friends,

Today the History Blog presents a story on the cleaning of Michelangelo's
first two sculptures "Madonna of the Steps" and "Battle of the Centaurs".
These two pieces were created when he was just a teenager working under the
tutelage of Bertoldo di Giovanni in 1490-91 and 1491-92, respectively.
Michelangelo considered "Battle of the Centaurs" to be one of his finest
works, and he retained both pieces all his life.

The two sculptures were carefully cleaned by the staff at the Casa
Buonarroti museum in Florence to remove dirt and the effects of earlier
cleanings. They are now displayed under improved lighting and new wall
coverings to enhance their beauty.

The story, including two brief videos showing the actual cleaning work, is
at http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/64003 .

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
