Noble Friends,

Today the BBC is offering a brief piece on scientific analysis of skeletal
remains from the Tudor ship Merry Rose. The findings show that some crew
members cane from places as far away as southern Europe, and possibly even
from Africa itself.

The story is found here: https://www.bbc.com/news/av/uk-wales-57601942 .
One of the real gems of this story is a two-minute video exploring how
isotopic traces in bones allowed researchers to learn from where some of
the crew hailed.

The print part of this piece is pretty short, and rather unsatisfying, but
does include a link to a slightly earlier and more complete BBC story:
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-hampshire-56985084 .

One of the jewels from the second story is a modern painting of the Mary
Rose under sail. Under close scrutiny you can see the anti-boarding nets
over the poop deck. These nets were a death trap for most of the crew when
the ship heeled over. Only about 35 of more than 400 crew and officers
escaped drowning, mostly men in the fighting tops or rigging.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
