Noble Friends,

Today the History Blog reports on an wonderful scientific find that has
redated at least one of Canterbury Cathedral's stained glass windows to
before Becket's murder.

The window in question is the Nathan window, part of several windows that
depict the ancestors of Jesus. Art historian Madeline Caviness long thought
the windows were Romanesque and predated the reconstruction following a
1174 fire, while others were Gothic. Thanks to work by another researcher,
Dr. (Laura) Ware Adlington, recently applied a non-invasive X-ray
fluorescence test on the glass. Comparison with other glass of known dates
and compositions showed that the Nathan window, at least, predates the
fire. It was probably removed and stored for later reuse.
