Noble Friends, especially Vikings,

Today the History Blog reports on a rare sword and scabbard found in a
grave on Orkney in 2015. The sword was removed for conservation and study,
and the verdict is in: the weapon is a 9th century Viking with some-pretty
high-status detailing.

The sword is in pretty bad condition, and had to be removed in a block of
soil. Most of what can be learned about it was revealed by x-ray analysis.

Also uncovered in 2015 was a rare boat burial just a few feet from the
grave that yielded the sword.

Here is the story: http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/62876 .

The BBC also reported on the sword:

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
