Noble Friends,

Today the History Blog is reporting the excavation of a 6th century
Anglo-Saxon warrior's grave, filled with its occupant and his grave goods.
This is a bit early for us, but is a bit of fascinating history from the
early Anglo-Saxon era.

The grave near Marlow in southern England was first located by a metal
detectorist in 2018 when she found two bronze bowls near the surface.
Recognizing their fragility, the finder immediately called local
archaeological authorities. The grave was not fully excavated until
recently. Among the other treasures besides the bowls were spear points and
an intact sword still in its scabbard. But the occupant himself proved most
unusual, being a huge man well over six feet tall.

You can read the story and see the objects at

A related story, including information about the early kingdom of Wessex is
found on Ancient Origins at

Yours Aye,
