Noble Friends, Especially Vikings,

Today the History Blog features an update on the Gjellestad Ship Burial in
Norway. Excavators have now removed enough soil to expose much of the
ship's structure.

Among the most valuable finds are common nails. These nails pierce "clinker
plates", small squares of iron used like washers, which were used to hold
the ship together. Even where the wood has disappeared, the nails and
clinker plates remain in place, giving valuable information on how the ship
was constructed.

No sign of the ship's occupant yet, but they have found the bones of a
large animal, perhaps an ox, an apparent sacrifice.

The article and several enlargeable photos is at

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
