Noble Friends,

Today the History Blog reports on a London archaeology project which has
uncovered remains of the city's oldest known theatre, excluding Roman
sites, of course. Evidence of gallery seating, and artifacts associated
with the theatre have been discovered.

John Brayne built the Red Lion Theatre around in 1567 adjacent to the
existing Red Lion pub at what is now 85 Stepney Lane. After Brayne built
another venue (with its own tap room for greater profits!), The Theatre in
Shoreditch, the Red Lion site was converted to a dog fighting arena.

The History Blog story is at http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/58843 .

More about the Red Lion Theatre is at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Lion_(theatre) .

Brayne's second theatre is detailed at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Theatre .

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
