Noble Friends,

On this date in 1376, Edward of Woodstock, later known as The Black Prince,
died at the Palace of Westminster. Edward of Woodstock was the son and heir
of King Edward III, and would have succeeded him as king just a year later
but for an early death brought on by a hard life of military campaigning.

The Black Prince was one of England's greatest knights, and was
particularly successful in France during the Hundred Years War. He was a
chief commander at the Battle of Crécy in 1346. He was in full command at
the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.

Later The Black Prince involved himself in Spain with Peter of Castile (aka
"Pedro the Cruel") fighting against Peter's usurper half-brother Henry of
Trastámara. Although Peter and the The Black Prince won the Battle of Nájera
in 1367, Peter refused to pay the Prince the agreed fees. While hanging
around Valladolid awaiting the funds which never came, The Black Prince
contracted dysentery. The disease destroyed his health, and its return in
1376 killed the Black Prince at the age of just 45.

The Black Prince was buried at Canterbury Cathedral with a marvelous bronze
funeral effigy in full armor topping his tomb. This effigy is one of the
finest examples of 14th century English armor.

Upon The Black Prince's death, his young son became King Edward III's heir,
succeeding his grandfather as Henry II the next year.

Yours Aye,
