Noble Friends, Especially Our Vikings,

Today the History Blog feature discusses the Yarm Helmet. The Yarm Helmet
is only the second confirmed Viking helmet in the world, the other having
been found in Norway.

This helm was found during sewer excavations in the 1950s, and only
recently scientifically confirmed as being from the 10th century. It was
manufactured in Northern England, and the Yarm area where it was found was
a Viking trading settlement in the 10th century.

The Yarm Helmet does have similar features to earlier Anglo-Saxon helms
such as the famous Sutton Hoo example. These Anglo-Saxon helms were pagan
grave goods, and were probably more ceremonial than everyday combat wear.
The Viking helmet is plain and functional armor. It is now preserved and on
display at the Preston Park Museum.

The History Blog story is found at

More on the Yarm Helmet, including additional photos and line-drawings of
how the complete piece would have looked (Sadian armorers take note!), can
be seen at the Preston Park Museum web pages:

.

And the aforementioned Viking helm from Norway? It is the Gjermundbu
 Helmet: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gjermundbu_helmet .

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
