Noble Friends,

On this date in 1540, the last English monastic abbey was closed by Henry
VIII's commissioners. This was Waltham Abbey in the euphoniously named
town. Part of the Norman abbey church remains in use today as the Abbey
Church of Waltham Holy Cross and St. Lawrence.

King Harold of Hastings fame built the third church to stand on this site.
He is said to have been buried before the abbey's high altar with the
permission of William the Conqueror. Harold's church was replaced by a
Norman building circa 1090, and the body was reburied (twice). This part of
the church is now gone, but the supposed grave site is marked by a small
monument in the churchyard on the spot where the original altar would have
stood.

The story of Waltham Abbey is found at

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
