Noble Friends,

Today one of Wikipedia's "Did You Know . . . ." features is all about the
Magdeburg Ivories.

The Ivories are 16 carved low-relief ivory panels depicting scenes from the
life of Jesus. They are known to have been commissioned by Holy Roman
Emperor Otto I around 968 when the See of Magdeburg was raised to an
archbishopric. The panels probably decorated a door or a pulpit in the
cathedral, but were removed in the 11th century, and used for other
purposes. Experts believe that there were more panels, as some key scenes
of Jesus' life and ministry are missing.

The story of the panels, and several striking images, are found at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magdeburg_Ivories .

More about Magdeburg Cathedral is found at

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
