Noble Friends,

Today the BBC is offering a delightful video exploring the ancient origins
of the Green Man. This figure was a popular decorative motif in English
churches, particularly during the 12-13th centuries, but actually occurs
across Europe and surprisingly even in the Middle East. But what does the
Green Man represent? Join host Alastair Sooke as he explores the story of
the Green Man at
http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20190104-the-surprising-roots-of-the-mysterious-green-man
.

More about the Green Man can be found at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Man . I was particularly intrigued by
the pub sign for the "Green Man and French Horn" in Covent Garden, as seen
in the image gallery. That combination really captures the mystery of the
Green Man for me.

A bibliography and links page to other Green Man resources can be found at
https://greenmanenigma.com/sources.html . Exploring this site could keep
you busy for a long time, but hey, we're here to learn, right?

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
