BBC Culture is offering a brief feature exploring THE TALE OF GENJI, the
world's first known novel. This work dates to 11th century Japan, and
describes the adventures and loves of the title character, Genji, a demoted
son of the Emperor. Besides being a rare literary survivor from that time,
THE TALE OF GENJI is interesting because it was written by a woman. The
author, Murasaki Shikibu, was a mid-level noble woman. The BBC story
