Noble Friends,

On this date in 1555 Olympia Fulvia Morata died in Heidelburg, Germany.
Morata was one of the most accomplished classical scholars of her time, all
the more interesting because she was a woman.

She was the daughter of Fulvio Pelligrino Morato, a famous Italian classic
scholar and tutor the rich and famous. Olympia grew up learning Latin and
Greek, and was fluent in both languages by the age of 12. In time she
became a language tutor to the Este children.

Like her father, Olympia was attracted to the teachings of Luther and
Calvin, We don't usually associate Protestantism with Italy, but this hints
at how widely Protestant ideas spread.

While escaping with her husband from fighting at Schweinfurt, most of
Olympia's writings were lost. Her ideas are chiefly known from some Greek
correspondence and Latin dialogues published posthumously.

A short biography of this remarkable woman can be found at

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
