Noble Friends,

On this date in 1482, Mary of Burgundy (aka "Mary the Rich") died from
injuries sustained in a hunting accident. Mary was the sole heiress of
Charles the Bold, the last Valois Duke of Burgundy. Mary succeeded her
father in 1477 as ruler of what is now Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg
and the Palatinate of Burgundy (the latter within the Holy Roman Empire).
Burgundy proper and Charles' other French territories were seized by the
King of France.

Mary wed the future Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, and they enjoyed a
happy marriage of less than five years until the accident. It was through
their marriage that control of the Low Countries passed to the Holy Roman
Empire.

Read more about Mary of Burgundy (and enjoy the lovely portrait) at

For more about the Duchy of Burgundy, see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchy_of_Burgundy . Take special note of the
map which shows the extent of Burgundian territories during the reign of
Charles the Bold. The otherwise postage-stamp map can be enlarged.

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
