Noble Friends,

On this date in 1559, King of France Henry II was wounded during a joust
when a lance splinter was driven through his visor and into his skull.
Ouch! The King died of infection on 10 July:

The knight who wounded the King was the captain of his own Scottish Guards,
Gabriel, Comte de Montgomery. On his deathbed, the King absolved Montgomery
of any blame. Still the knight was disgraced and left court. He later
converted to Protestantism, and caused more headaches of a different sort
for France. Eventually, Montgomery was captured and topped for treason:

Jousting can be a dangerous sport.

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
