Noble Friends,

On this date in 1525, Richard de la Pole (aka "The White Rose") was killed
while fighting alongside Francis I at the Battle of Pavia. Richard de la
Pole was the last Yorkist to actively seek the English throne, and a major
thorn in the side of Henry VIII:

Henry VII and Henry VIII feared the Poles and their royal claims. As the
Wikipedia story notes, most of the family were executed for treason
(whether justified or not). Richard survived, but spent his later life in
exile on the Continent as a "guest" of powerful monarchs. He was both a
player and a pawn the in constant intrigues against England, and was a
useful tool of English enemies there.

Also of interest, Richard was descended through female ancestors from
Geoffrey Chaucer.

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
