Noble Friends, Especially Fellow Scots:

On this date in 1567, Lord Darnley, King Consort of Mary Queen of Scots,
was murdered at Kirk o' Field, Edinburgh. During the early morning
Darnley's house was blown apart with gunpowder. However, he and a servant
were found strangled or smothered in a nearby orchard, but unharmed by the
blast.

The mystery of who committed the crime has never been solved. The chief
suspect, with or without complicity of Queen Mary, has generally been James
Hepburn, Lord Bothwell. He and Mary were wed just three months after the
murders. Their scandalous marriage caused the downfall of Queen Mary,
forcing her into exile and imprisonment in England.
