On this date in 1457, the Mainz Psalter, the second major book printed in
Europe with moveable type, was issued. The exact date is known because the
printers put the date on a colophon, a practice that soon became almost
universal. The Psalter was published by Johan Fust and Peter Schoeffer of
Mainz, who had recently broken with Gutenburg to set up their own
publishing house. The book was printed on vellum, featuring woodcuts and
multi-colored pages. Because Fust and Schoeffer used vellum instead of
