Noble Friends,

Today BBC Travel is offering a slide show about Monsanto, a village in
Portugal which is sited atop a mountain with its buildings sandwiched among
giant boulders. Monsanto has changed only slowly for the past 500 years, so
the slide show is not only delightfully weird, but also instructive for our
period of interest.

Enjoy the show at

. Note that some of the slides link to video clips.

Other views of Monsanto's quirky buildings can be found at

I looked in vain for a view of the Templar castle that the BBC claims sits
above the village. Wikipedia came to the rescue with an article just about
the castle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_of_Monsanto . The best
view of the castle can be obtained by clicking on the thumbnail photo above
the summary block at the top right of the page. Sadly, much of the original
Templar castle was replaced by post-SCA period fortifications, but they are
still interesting.

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
