Noble Friends,

In 1216, “Bad King John” lost his treasure and crown jewels when his baggage train was overwhelmed by rising tides somewhere in the coastal mudflats of Lincolnshire. This much is fact, recorded in historical documents. The quest for this treasure has fascinated the English ever since, and has even spawned “documentary” programs on U.S. television (more speculation than fact).

Today the BBC has a feature story about the treasure and one man’s quest to find it. The so-called “Metal Detector Man” may be somewhat eccentric, but his quest speaks to how much the treasure haunts the English psyche.

You can read the story at http://www.bbc.com/travel/story/20170926-the-lost-jewels-of-bad-king-john

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, whose metal detecting centers on lost arrows
