On this date in 1580, Francis Drake’s surviving ship the Golden Hind returned to Plymouth after nearly three years. During that time Drake raided Spanish shipping on the Pacific coast of South America, sucked up huge piles of treasure, claimed California for England, and completed his voyage by circling the globe. It was for this voyage, especially the vast amount treasure he brought back to Queen Elizabeth, that Drake was knighted in 1581 (curiously, dubbed by the French ambassador not the Queen): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Drake .
