Noble Friends,

On this date in 1377 English King Edward III died. Edward was a powerful
warrior king. In addition to trouncing Scotland in several important
battles, he started the Hundred Years War against France.

The cause of the war was Edward's refusal to accept the French King
Phillip VI as his liege lord for English-held Aquitaine and Ponthieu. In
Edward's view, this could make him subject to the French king in all
things, the same way English kings viewed Scotland. Phillip probably
felt the same way, and was trying to back Edward into a corner. When
Phillip seized these territories in 1337, Edward had a cause for war.
Edward was also a grandson of Phillip IV, and claimed the throne of
France through is mother Isabella, but this was probably more of a side
issue. Edward's Scottish wars perfected the archer-heavy tactics
invented by his paternal grandfather Edward I, and France was soon to
pay a heavy price for provoking the war.

Here is more about Edward:

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
