Noble Friends,

Edward I, King of England, was born on this date in 1239. Edward was a
warrior king (some might say a "conquer monkey"). He spent most of his
reign in wars, first conquering Wales, and then with much more
difficulty against Scotland. Here he succeeded for a time, but couldn't
hold Scotland for long. Edward, who styled himself "Hammer of the Scots"
[Boo! Hiss!], was responsible for William Wallace's very messy
state-sponsored demise. In fact, Edward was on his way to stamp out a
resurgent independence movement led by King Robert the Bruce when he
died from dysentery in 1307.

On a personal note (yes, yes, as I've bragged before), my ancestor John
le Nae Peer was taken captive by Edward at the siege of Stirling Castle
in 1304. When I visited Stirling, I wore a Napier kilt in honor of my
ancestor and in symbolic defiance of Edward. Actually, Edward could be
quite merciful to his defeated enemies, when it suited him. The
surviving Stirling garrison was spared, with the common soldiers and
civilians sent home, except one Englishman who was hanged for treason.
The 22 propertied gentleman, including John, were released after ransoms
were paid.

I may not like Edward very much (actually not at all), but must
acknowledge that he was one of England's greatest and most successful kings.

A very complete biographical sketch of Edward is available at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_I_of_England .

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Proud Scot
