Noble Friends,

On this date in 614, my namesake St. Mungo died in Glasgow, then in the
Britonic kingdom of Strathclyde. Mungo was the founder of Glasgow, which
grew around his monastic community, and he is still considered the
patron saint of that city. He actually wasn't Scottish, as that term
didn't yet exist, but was Welsh by birth. Although his real name was
Kentigern, he is better known by his pet name Mungo (usually translated
today as "beloved friend").

Here are two brief biographical sketches of St. Mungo:
http://catholicsaints.info/saint-kentigern/ and
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Mungo .

Glasgow Cathedral, one of just two intact medieval cathedrals in
Scotland, is dedicated to Kentigern/Mungo. Wikipedia has a page about
the Cathedral: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_Cathedral . The
building is no longer an official cathedral, since it is not the seat of
a bishop. The structure is actually owned by the crown and is maintained
by Historic Scotland, but its congregation is part of the
Presbyterian-aligned Church of Scotland.

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, That Proud Scot
